Emily Duke’s Artist Statement

My work takes the form of installations, discreet ceramic objects and performative video. Within my sculptures, assemblages of posed geometric forms, draped curtains and steel armatures build physical and metaphorical spaces that reference surreal, domestic landscapes. These thematic tableaus serve as a ground for experiencing the performative presence of sculptural objects. The subjects I employ in my work relate to my ongoing research into historical superstitions and our humanistic urge to build meaning around the objects we collect. I am in constant pursuit of linking the agency of objects with the human body as catalyst.

Chelsea A! Flowers’s Artist Statement

Using art as a method of inspection for the many questions about my existence, my visibility in society is my current investigation. I am plagued with the question, ‘what does it mean to see someone?’ And“how do I find visibility and community when/where I am not seen?” Through the various stand up comedy routines, and performative works such as Thanks for the Memories, Check Point, and A War On Partying, I create moments of engagement by creating simulacrum installation of a game room, and comedy/karaoke club. Through comedic performances and installations that create a community where hierarchies are disbanded and people can engage with one another, enjoy themselves, find empathy through entertainment, and have their humanity acknowledged.

About Revealed, Emerging Artist Series 2020

The Sculpture Center invites early career artists of the greater Ohio region whose practice includes sculpture, installation, mixed and expanded media, relational aesthetics, and performance to apply for inclusion in its annual Revealed Emerging Artist Series (formerly Window to Sculpture or W2S). Through this keystone program, now in its thirtieth year, The Sculpture Center fosters and promotes the careers of exceptional sculptors during the first ten years of their profession. Four to six artists are selected annually by a diverse Exhibition Committee for one-person, full gallery exhibitions of new work in our galleries. We are proud to present Nate Ricciuto, Lisa Walcott, Emily Duke, and Chelsea A! Flowers as the selected Revealed 2020 Artists.
