Erin Mallea explores the past and present of particular microcosms as metaphors for larger human and environmental conditions. Analytical, playful, and often public in nature, her work manifests in a range of media including sculpture, installation, video, writing, and participatory projects. At the root of Mallea’s art practice is a commitment to learning about the complex social and ecological spaces she inhabits. Her work is grounded in place-based research and partnerships that she develops outside of traditional art spaces. She has partnered with community volunteers to develop a performance as a choral insect cacophony, developed an “invasive” species test kitchen and community sourced cookbook with a group of biologists and initiated a project with her family to create conversations around generational care and death.
Mallea received her MFA from Carnegie Mellon University in 2019. She has shown at A.I.R. Gallery (Brooklyn, NY) the European Cultural Center (Venice, Italy), Boise Art Museum (Boise, ID) and Miller Institute for Contemporary Art (Pittsburgh, PA). Mallea and is based in Pittsburgh, PA and currently serves as Adjunct Instructor at Carnegie Mellon University.
