In this talk, Mingdong will share his current thinking on the criticality of queer art. He will explain his nuanced approach to navigating boundaries that have been put in place to protect queer artists from patriarchal traditions and how he rejects the subsequent limitations that stem from these boundaries. Sun will also speak about the balance of power, vulnerability, and empathy in creating representative work for the queer community as shown in Impotent Pegasus .
Mingdong Sun is an artist and curator currently based in Shanghai, China. His practice analyzes the sympathies of human desires in order to heal childhood trauma on a personal and societal level. In 2022, he was Assistant Curator for the exhibition Under the Skin, Between the Machines at the How Museum in Shanghai, China. He received his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2020. Mingdong Sun was awarded this solo Revealed exhibition following his participation in The Sculpture Center’s exhibition The Shape of Sculpture: Recent Cranbrook Graduates in 2020.
Dr. Andrea Wolk Rager is the Jesse Hauk Shera Associate Professor in the Department of Art History and Art at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. She received her PhD from Yale University and held a Postdoctoral Research Associate position at the Yale Center for British Art. In 2012, she served as co-curator with Angus Trumble for the exhibition Edwardian Opulence: British Art at the Dawn of the Twentieth Century, and co-edited the accompanying catalogue. Her most recent book, The Radical Vision of Edward Burne-Jones, was published in 2022 by the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, distributed by Yale University Press.
