Her work has been in group exhibitions at the Tacoma Contemporary (Tacoma, WA - 2008), the Roy G Biv Gallery (Columbus, OH - 2006), and other museums and galleries across the country. She received her MFA from Ohio University (2007) and was awarded her BFA and BA in Art History from the University of Minnesota (Minneapolis, MN - 2003). Elissa Cox creates installations that turn the world inside out to exemplify human pain. Hers are exuberant, seemingly chaotically constructed, often visually and emotionally overwhelming environments made largely with cloth, wax, plaster, and latex. Her forms, both actual and fantastical, are inspired by the configurations of the human body’s interior structure and organs, on a micro and macro scale, and the natural landscape. The work presents transitions from pain to beauty and approaches an embodiment of exquisite pain. The installation becomes a literal landscape of the pain, rawness, and splendor found hidden within the body and the psyche. The artist thanks Lincoln Electric Co. Cleveland, OH, for their generous donation of the welder casings in this installation.
